Embodied – All of Me

Body Harmony is a way of life. It’s a bodywork modality that leads us to living in such a way that all of our body is included in every choice and decision that we make. Daily.

Think about that for a moment.

All of me is on board. With everything.

No more shearing off part of myself. No more fragmenting. All of me is here, fully on board with this choice, or that decision.

Intuition is perception via the unconscious. ~ Carl Jung

Body Harmony is the optimal way to make accessible that which Jung would have called intuition. And not just accessible, but conscious.

Our animal bodies constantly receive an unending stream of information which they communicate to us via sensation. The more we are able to expand and integrate this information into our decision making, the more access we have to our intuition.

The best way to increase the effectiveness of any system is to connect it to more of itself. ~ Don McFarland

What delights me about Body Harmony, one of its most interesting aspects, is how it results in our conscious visions coming into physical manifestation. It’s a way of making our dreams real, whatever they might be. It feels like the bringing of heaven down to earth. The best antidote to transcendent escapism or endemic spiritual bypass. Real.

This is what re-wilding is really about. Becoming fully alive to all of the voices from our informed bodies.

Our bodies.

Our form.

Along with us for the ride with every choice and decision we make.

Decisions made listening to all of the information available to us, both from outside of ourselves and from our physical, embodied responses. Every sensation is a response. To a thought, to a scent, to a word, a breeze, an image, in fact to an unquantifiable series of incoming data-packets.

Become embodied. Embody me. Be real. On Earth. Present and accessing all of the information available to me.

I look to increase what is available to me as information. There’s an entire cosmos in here, reflecting responses to everything out there. No need to look to expand, voraciously, outside of myself. There’s enough to keep me going for lifetimes just becoming increasingly aware of all of the minute responses happening all of the time inside of me and using them to inform my choices in co-creating with life.

Gravity, surrender and the yoga mat

Taking time on my yoga mat is a frequent activity at McLeod Mansions.   Particularly the taking time bit.

When I slow right down and notice how my body is responding to gravity, I get to experience

Gravity as support.

Wondering what I mean?  Read on…

This particular morning, feeling a little exhausted by the relentless rhythms of school and maybe a smidge of trying to keep up with the rhythms of neighbours, colleagues, the whole damn world … I chose to do what I know works best for me, take the time to listen.

Lying in corpse pose (what’s not to love?!) flat on my back, arms and legs comfortably arranged I scan through my body noticing what I find.

My breath rises and falls, becoming more effortless with each new inhale. Effortlessly extending itself, and my muscles with it, on each exhale. And within a few more breaths I reach that place of potential where my breath is breathing me.

I extend a silent invitation to myself to let my awareness expand and feel all the places where my body comes into contact with the mat and floor.

Another to allow all cells, every single last one, to drop into the support of gravity and the earth.

My breath sweeps through my body like gentle lapping waves.

On each exhale more cells accept gravity’s invitation.

I let my awareness wander, directed by sensation, watching gently, softly, as my body releases more and more down into the support of the mat, the support of gravity.

At some point my attention’s drawn to a place in the back of my right arm.  Feeling in as specifically as I’m able, without effort… What is that?

I wait for my body to answer….

There’s a bunch of cells, no matter how many, I can feel them. They’re resisting the invitation to drop into relaxation.  Choosing instead to stay engaged. Alert. Poised.

By-passing the distraction of asking Why? I realise :

It’s not quite a No to my invitation .. more of a  Not-under-these-conditions.

So I ask : What do you need in order to say Yes to gravity’s offer to support you?

I let the next few breaths curl sinuously in between what feels like each individual cell.  As my breath flows outward, effortlessly like a leaf falling from a tree, I can feel the slightest tingle of release.  On the next breath, more.

And over each successive breath the tissue which was holding itself alert, ready to keep up with some external rhythm, made a different choice.  Was seduced from it’s inefficient tension by my breath, by my attention, by my taking the time.

PS.     I’ve been using the Dolphin pose on the mat since then, moving exquisitely slowly, exploring as my weight, the pull of gravity, the movement of my breath all flow through this particular part of my arm.  These specific few cells are becoming more and more integrated into the movement through my whole arm and shoulder complex.

The ripples of their eventual Yes are spreading out …  and their greater ease is being reflected in subtle re-alignments along pathways I didn’t know were there before.

The pull of external rhythms also has less purchase on me now. In freeing my body responses I’ve changed how I experience mine and other rhythms.

Gurubody ~ My body is my Guru.

Is it normal to take 4 whole days to backup your website and upload a bunch of overdue upgrades and other life-giving, juicy stuff?  Well it’s my normal. It’s simply ‘what happens’ now that my Body gets to call the shots.

Long exhale into something more interesting;  some pleasure and ease …

You might have thought that after 20+ years of learning it’s language and listening in I wouldn’t fall for To-do lists over-riding my Body’s smarts… but hey.  A constant process of refinement, no?

On Tuesday (#vicarioustravelmonday having caused the week to begin a day late already) the need-tos and shoulds were clamouring, along with that multitude of voices intent on looking after my best-interests (sweet misguided monsters that they are).  A perfect storm of cocktails were being served up by the generous staff at the Synaptic Bar.  Behind on several weeks’ delivery of daylight and particularly sunshine, my Body finally declared a No that day.  A Not-under-these-conditions.

So I took my Body to the bath.

And asked it : Where could you use some help from the memory of Full Spectrum Light (aka sunshine)?  After all, I just lived in Andalucia for nearly 10 years, the cellular memory can’t be that far away!

Then my Body took me to the yoga mat.

I took a few easeful breaths, aligning my posture in gravity as effortlessly as I was able.

Then I invited my body to remember the physical sensations of being in Full Spectrum Light. It tingled and relaxed just about everywhere as the memory seeped in and the cells felt like they were literally lighting up.

As the sensations grew stronger, the places unable to soak in the chemical information from the memory became more obvious.  A stiffness in the fingers of my right hand and a tightness in the right side of my neck. There was a pinching beneath my right shoulder blade which connected in to my core muscles via my solar plexus too.

Sometimes, I like to use the familiar movements and poses of the asanas to explore what’s going on in the world of my Body.  If I slow the movements down to the tiniest of increments,  transitioning from one place to the next almost cell-by-cell,  then I don’t miss the gems that are almost always to be found nestling between layers of tissue; maybe sticking to some fascia, or right at the interface of muscle and bone.

As I began to explore some super simple pose, at snails pace, I discovered the little catches and compressions that were impeding the flow of movement and breath in my body and causing the sensations of stiffness and pinching.  They were pretty damn specific. They always are.

I used the sensation of gravity for more information, as it offered the downward pull of it’s gentle support;

I allowed my breath to gently curl between the cells and it’s mere presence to ease some space into compression and stickiness;

I soft-focussed my awareness so that all of these invitations to my tissue were extended with spaciousness and curiosity.

By the time I was done on the yoga mat (40 minutes and maybe 2 and a half asanas later!) I had a new series of reference points in my own physical tissue.

So next time I feel that majorly diminished pinch below my shoulder blade, I can continue to build on my exploration on the yoga mat.  I can allow that tiny point of tissue to take part in the full movement coming from my core muscles up through my solar plexus, rather than holding itself out of the dance and becoming a restriction to full ease and greater efficiency.

Gurubody Invitation #23 Fluidity/Flow

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

Listening to my body’s sensations and asking where I feel the most Flow, what do I notice?

That my right foot begins to listen to my left which is standing with greater softness on the yoga mat this morning.

How that softness in my left foot allows for more Flow through my knee and hip and more responsive support for my left side.

Calling for that same sense of Flow and responsive support, my right foot invites more breath to help create space through it’s multiple joints and strong muscles

…. as I ease through an elongated outbreath, I feel a subtle dropping of unnecessary effort and the sole of my foot relaxes only just perceptibly yet deeper into the cool texture of the mat.

I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Gurubody Invitation #22 Curiosity

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

What happens then when I bring a little Curiosity into my listening to my gurubody?

If I’m aligning myself with ease and breathing effortlessly, letting my body’s movement be impulsed by the movement of my breath, what’s there for me to notice?

And if I add a side of Curiosity to my exploring, what more comes to my attention?

Do I notice more by being Curious about what I’ll discover?

Just what effect does refining my alignment in gravity have?  And if I’m even more Curious, what else do I notice?

If I add a little more appreciation for my body right here, right now, what surprises me in what I discover?

I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Gurubody Invitation #21 Effortless

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

Minimum effort makes for maximum efficiency …  so where can I drop into more Effortlessness with my body today?

If I tune-in to the sensations and ask my body where it’s making more Effort than necessary, what parts start speaking to me?

Where do I feel little tensions (or big ones), maybe a pinching or holding somewhere on my exhale, or maybe I just notice somewhere that could release more fully into gravity’s support?

With a little appreciation for this message so as not to go making myself wrong for anything I might discover, how much more Effortlessness can I invite in?

What ripples of ease are supported by my breath?

How much more freedom for motility can I create?

I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Gurubody Invitation #20 Motility

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

How can I create an optimal environment so that Motility occurs freely in my body?

mo·til·i·ty   noun.

1. Biology  Moving or having the power to move spontaneously: motile spores.

2. Psychology  Of or relating to mental imagery that arises primarily from sensations of bodily movement and position rather than from visual or auditory sensations.

Mobility is familiar to us, but Motility?  As described above, it’s the tiny micro-movements which our bodies or our psyches make spontaneously without our conscious intention.

It precedes mobility in the vital moving aliveness of our body temples.

What happens when I take the time to individually invite my breath, alignment and attention to support the increase of Motility in my body?

What do I notice…?
I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Gurubody Invitation #19 Space

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

Is there anywhere in my body which feels like it could do with more Space right now?

Where is my attention drawn to if I ask this question of my body rather than my thoughts?  Has my awareness made any difference to what I can feel already?

And after a few easy and effortless breaths, how does my body want me to use gravity to help make more Space? Can I let it pull my breath down into Spaces that it hasn’t been reaching?

Sometimes I shift the focus of my attention until it feels like I’m aware of each individual cell and the Spaces between them, like the old movie where a character is shrunk and can travel inside someone’s body at microscopic size.

If I feel like playing with this  what happens to my sense of Space within my body?

I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Gurubody Invitation #18 Brain

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

What cocktail is my Brain serving up to my body right now and could the mix do with any tweaking?!

Taking a moment to align my body easily in relation to gravity and breathe some undulations through it…. I bring my awareness to my Brain, floating in cerebro-spinal fluid inside my skull.

What sensations are there when I listen-in to its floating?

The plates of bone that make up my skull are not fused, there’s an infinite capacity for micro-movements and pulsations between them… can I refine my awareness, soften my breathing and feel any of them?

If I soften the multitude of muscles on my face, what effects ripple through my skull and my Brain?

The electrical activity of my synapses flows through my spinal cord serving up cocktails of invitation/instruction … as I bring a bit of awareness to my spine and spinal cord, what sensations make me aware that this is happening?

Can I feel the activity of my Brain all the way down to my sacrum at the bottom of my spine and branching through my lower body?

Has bringing awareness to my body’s responses to my Brain had an effect on my Brain itself?

I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!

Gurubody Invitation #17 Lungs

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

How fully and with how much ease am I using my Lungs?

If I take a moment, it might take a few tries, can I just let the air flow effortlessly in and out of my Lungs?

Where does it flow fully and easily?

Is it filling the front as much as the back?   If not, can I soften into the tissue (muscle, bone, connective tissue, whatever..) which is right next to them?

What happens if I do?

My right lung has 3 lobes and my left just 2 to make room for my heart, can I feel that as I breath?

The bottom of each lung rests on the muscle of my solar plexus, the top reaches up to nestle below my collar bones, how much of this length am I using right now?  What happens if I invite a little more air to come in on the next breath, and the one after?  If I let the extra air lap up against the tissue which is inviting it in….

And if I let the exhale lengthen … ?

I’d love to hear what you discover from your own Gurubody.  If you’d like to,  please let us know what you find in the comments and if you’ve got any questions ask away and I’ll get back to you as soon as I’m able!
