Gurubody Invitation #16 Skin

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

What’s my body feeling in the area just-on and just-off my Skin?

 

What’s there to notice if I bring my attention there right now?

Where can I feel into easily, and is there anywhere with little or no sensation?

 

What happens if I bring more breath into theses areas…. does the ease expand? Can I begin to feel into the places with less sensation?

 

There’s a huge richness of what I perceive as me and not-me in this area of transition between on-my-body and off-my-body.

 

How solid or how permeable does my Skin feel right now?

Gurubody Invitation #15 Connections

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

When I come across places in my body which need some support, what Connections within my own physical self are there to provide it?

 

And how can I find them?

 

When I find places with tension, pain, discomfort, restriction or less general flow and movement what can I do? I can ask my body which other places  are Connected to these initial sensations, and see what areas come to my attention.

 

And then I can see what happens if I soften into the Connection and trace it’s pathway through my tissue.  Where does that path go?  Being open to  being surprised by the route the Connection takes can yield more information too…

And then I can go about bringing a little more breath into the Connection and watching to see what happens ..

And I can see if there are any places where I can invite my body to drop into that support from gravity a smidge more too…

What happens if I give myself some space to do all that?  How do the initial things that I noticed respond?

Gurubody Invitation #14 Heart

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

It kinda helps me to follow a ‘path with Heart’* if I can feel mine.

 

*Don Juan, amongst many others, recommended to Carlos Castaneda to ‘Follow the path with Heart’.  All well and good, until I discover I’m limited in how much I can feel of my own literal, physical Heart muscle…

To start with I can bring my awareness to the area where my Heart lies in my chest. What are the first layers of sensation?  Can I feel the front and back, or the sides, equally? How about the top and bottom?  Lordy… the top and bottom!

How is my Heart muscle relating to the tissue that’s immediately next to it?

My lung, ribs, muscles of my chest and even the rainbow thin film of fascia that encases everything?  Is there’s an easy existence side-by-side inside my chest? Do they dance with each Heart beat… could the music of my breath and some softening into one-another ease the steps of their dance?

 

Oh please, let me take my time with this one.  This oh-so-over-referred-to organ of my body. Is this the Heart I’ve been following when I thought I was following my Heart?

Gurubody Invitation #13 Sides

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

Having fun sidling up to some Sides metaphors today, side-splitting! … but what’s really going on round there?

 

If I take one side first, or both at once, and trace with my awareness where the back of my body and the front of it meet, what path does that meeting trace down my Sides?

I can start at my head and neck, and travel down my arms which have 2 Sides each, and then come in to my oxters (Scots for armpits eh) and continue on down my torso and then back to the 2-Sides-each thing with my legs.

 

In my own time of course.

And with some breath and some inviting in extra softness if needed….

Is the meeting on my Side a clear one?  Or is it less delineated? Or maybe there’s a sense of overlapping?

 

And what else goes on in the rest of the vast territory of my body when I explore the Sides of myself?

Gurubody Invitation #12 Smile

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

I’m just wondering what will happen if I bring a little more Smile, like the one that’s playing at the edges of my mouth, into the rest of my body?

 

And how can I do that thing?

Actually, from practice it’s already happening, so how do I bring it to where I’m not feeling it… ?

It’s more down my left side than my right, so I’m checking in there now to see if I can use my breath and let anywhere that’s holding out of gravity soften a little more…

Surrendering into the support of my chair lets the tingling sensations dance more fully down through my right side.

I wonder what kind of effect inviting it down into my roots might have ?

 

That’s an interesting sensation, like being strung on a string of bubbling and tingling. It reminds me that one of the mayan languages’ word for human beings translates to something like ‘cosmic root vibrator’. As if we we’re 2 legged carrots, moving about over the surface of the earth performing a function, an earth-acupuncture of sorts.

Gurubody Invitation #11 More Breath

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

Ok so what can I do when I come across and area which could do with more Breath?

 

I can soften the tissue around the area, and watch to see if this ease allows more of my inhale to reach in…   Does it help if I let my inhale lap gently at the edges of this area?  What happens?

What can I do to make my Breath an invitation to the tissue, to each cell, to soften and allow the flow of air and movement?

If I just watch where it does go, does this make a difference?

If I allow the Breath to do the softening in it’s own time, and allow myself to be surprised by what happens…  then what does happen?!

 

As I let my exhale elongate a little more each time, I can let any tension, tightness or pinching I find release itself just a little more fully into gravity’s support…

Gurubody Invitation #10 Undulation

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

What kind of micro-movements will my body make if I just let it…?

 

Once I arrange myself in alignment with gravity, and gently watch my breath flow, what tiny movements occur without my instigating them?

And if I let my breath become fuller, easier, elongated, how does that impact on the quality and size of movements?

I check in again to see that these movements are impulsed purely by my body and the movement of my breath… and when I do that, what do I notice happening?

 

How can I allow more of these movements in more of my body?  What needs to happen to let them expand and extend their range?

Still with the movement being instigated by my breath and my tissue’s response….

Gurubody Invitation #9 Alignment

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

(This one’s good with a mirror or a friend)…

 

How does it feel and look when my body is effortlessly in Alignment with gravity?

 

Taking a longish moment, several breaths or more, I’m Aligning my body in gravity… looking for the most effortless way to stack my spinal column one bone on top of the other, for my hips to effortlessly let my legs hang to the ground, for my arms to drop from my shoulders with ease and my neck and head to sit lightly on top.

 

How does this feel, what attracts my attention through this process?

 

And then how does it look in the mirror or to a friend’s appreciative eyes?

Is my sense of Alignment based on concrete physical line-up where maximum efficiency and ease are created?  Or is it a familiar posture where in fact I’m leaning or holding some part of myself out of gravity’s line and effortless Alignment?

Gurubody Invitation #8 Core

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

There’s a big muscle complex at my Core called the iliopsoas which lines the flare of my pelvis, joins my thigh bone and links on to each of the first 6 lower vertebrae in my spine.

 

What image and sense of this muscle do I get when I ask my body to feel into it?  I take my time… there’s plenty of it… time and muscle.

It’s the Core muscle for supporting me sitting or on foot … have I learned to over-ride it with other muscles (back, butt, belly, leg muscles maybe)?  How many others are working unnecessarily?

Greater ease makes me more efficient.

How can I soften, deeper into my Core using my exhale, extended and guided by my awareness?   What do I notice happening when I do?

Gurubody Invitation #7 Crown

A series of 30 Invitations to listen to your Gurubody.

 

Bringing some awareness to the Crown of my head, what’s going on there right now?

 

Can I let the skin of my scalp soften and loosen, does that change what I can feel? If I ask my body what my skull feels like at the Crown of my head, what sensations are responding to my question?

The question itself is making me bring a little more breath up there until I wonder if those tingles are cranio-sacral fluid pulsing inside my cranium so that my brain can float in a sea of safety?

 

If I’m willing, I can drop my attention deeper into my brain and ask if I’m able to feel the area in and around my pineal gland?  I could google it, but it’s interesting in the meantime to check in to where my own pineal sensation is….

 

Bringing my attention back to the Crown, I can extend my awareness upward and outward and ask what is my Crown connecting to right now?  Taking my time, what kind of grounding connections extend from here, and how does the impact of any connection I find ripple out through the rest of my body?
